The building of a new vessel involves a large investment for the owner and is a labour intensive process for the shipyard. Coatings form a relatively small part of the total vessel cost, yet they are a key factor in subsequent asset protection, safe operation and maximising revenues when the vessel is in service. Maintenance with coatings prevents the steel from returning to its original oxidised state during the course of the vessels life.
